April, 1986 – April, 1989: medical officer (Lieutenant) at the “Scuola Ufficiali Carabinieri” of Rome (Carabinieri Officers Academy), with part time duties at Rome military hospital “Celio” and at the Italian presidential guard (so called “Corazzieri”). In April 1987 I successfully applied to voluntarily extend for other 24 months the one year mandatory army service. During those three years in the Carabinieri, my main duties were: treatment of casualties, community medicine programmes such as epidemiology, prevention, control and treatment of both non communicable and communicable diseases, vaccinations and surveillance of local health conditions. During the off dutv hours I continued to attend the lst Department of Surgery of the University of Rome “Sapienza” medical school and the 5-year-long specialty school in general surgery, being involved in various researches.

July, 1986: appointment as medical expert witness of the Court of Rome.

May August, 1989: full time attendance of the 1st Department of Surgery of the University of Rome “Sapienza”, to complete the program of the general surgery specialty school, directed by Prof. S. Stipa.

September, 1989 to August, 1990: sponsored by the Irish government (through the Italian Dept. of Foreign Affairs) to perform clinical research in Ireland for 12 months. I completed two studies, the first on 512 pregnant women to assess prevalence of gallstones within them and to look for any possibly related condition(s). This research was accepted for oral presentation by the British Society of Gastroenterology Southampton, UK, September 1990, and published in the journals “Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics” and “European Journal of Epidemiology”. The second research was conducted on 133 Irish soldiers to assess positivity of Helicobacter pylori infection within them, and to ascertain any change after a 6 month stay in a war area as part of the United Nations Interim Forces In Lebanon (UNIFIL). The preliminary and conclusive results were presented at the 3rd, 4th, and 5th international conferences on Helicobacter pylori infection and gastroduodenal pathology, which were held in Toledo (Spain), Bologna (Italy), and Dublin (Ireland) in November 1990 and 1991 and in July 1992, respectively. This research was published in the European Journal of Epidemiology. Both studies were performed under the supervision of Prof. C O’Morain (consultant gastroenterologist) and of Prof. WA Tanner (consultant surgeon).

September, 1990 till now: permanent appointment at the Department of Surgery “Pietro Valdoni” of the University of Rome “Sapienza” (1st Medical School) as “Aggregate Professor”.

May, 1992: in Dublin at the Meath/Adelaide Hospitals to follow some procedures of minimally invasive surgery performed by Prof. WA Tanner and Prof. FBV Keane.

July August, 1992: in Denver (Colorado, USA) at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center under Dr. GV Stiegmann, to take part to various minimally invasive surgery procedures.
